Briercliffe 10 30/04/2013 - Evening Series Round 5 - Report

After last weeks encouragingly warm conditions, this week fell back to a typical April evening with a chill in the air and a vicious wind from the East, all of which indicated a slower evening than last week. There was another good turn out of riders with eleven Nomads and four guest riders competing in Round 5 of the Briercliffe series.

Andrew Herbert reclaimed top spot with his fastest time round the Old Warden circuit this year with 24m 21s. Simon Doyle edged out Ryan Witchell by two seconds to fill 2nd and 3rd places respectively.

James Gomm continued to show improvement after a somewhat slow start to the season with a personal best around the Briecliffe 10 of 25m 29s and Charlie Pugh also set his fastest time around the circuit with a 29m 24s.

Well done to James Spence who flew solo on the stop watches for the first time, and managed to produce a flawless set of results despite Pugh, Gomm and Gell all finishing in a five second window to really test James' new found skills.

Thanks also to Frank Turner who assisted with time keeping and to Geoff Perry for pushing off.

Race Report - Team Milton Keynes 10 Mile TT - 28 April 2013

Three riders represented the Nomads at the Team Milton Keynes promoted 10 mile time trial on 28 April 2013. Riders faced stiff conditions on the return leg of the Brogborough based course with a strong headwind forcing riders' average times downwards. James Gomm recorded his second fastest time to go under the 25 minute barrier. Nick Hickman produced a solid performance to build on his recent rides in the Briercliffe and Interclub series. Simon Doyle continued to show good form with his first sub-24 minute ride of the season.

Results.
Simon Doyle (12th place) 23.21, James Gomm (23rd)  24.43, Nick Hickman (31st) 26.21

The event was won by Ashley Cox (CC Luton) in 20.38.

Briercliffe 10 23/04/2013 - Evening Series Round 4 - Report

With numbers matching last week's bumper crop of 24 riders the evening also proved generous following one of the warmest days of the year so far, Round 4 of the Nomads' Briercliffe evening series had the potential to see fast times notched on the results sheet.

Temperatures were in the mid-teens and a gentle South Westerly wind blew riders along the Growers.

Ben Wilson was again the first Nomad home with a slightly faster time from last week's effort. He recorded 24m 12s.

Guest rider Jim Moffatt of Virgin Active recorded the fastest time of the season so far with an impressive 22m 48s.

Time keepers and assistants for the evening were Frank Turner, Geoff Perry, James Spence and Tony Furby, with David Rossall honing his photographic skills on the final climb to capture the look of pain in the riders' faces on the climb in to the finish.

Briercliffe 10 16/04/2013 - Evening Series Round 3 - Report

A bumper field of 24 riders competed in Round 3 of the Nomads' Briercliffe evening series.

The weather conditions were vastly improved in comparison to the previous two events. Although the sun was on their backs riders were still forced to deal with a strong westerly wind which made riding heavy as they headed off the G&M Growers section in to Southill.

Ben Wilson was first Nomad home with a superb time of 24m 15s. Andy Herbert marked his season debut with an impressive 24.29. Current series leader, Simon Doyle came home a further 12 seconds in arrears for third.

Of the guest riders Jason Stuart (CC Ashwell) clocked a sub-24 minute time for the second time this year.

The standard of racing has seen an increasing number of riders go sub-25 minutes, a standard which was rarely attained in previous seasons.

Frank Turner kept an eye on the clocks, James Spence and Geoff Perry pushed-off and assisted. Clive Collins took on the roll as Public Address system in calling out riders' times at the end of play. Many thanks also to Paul Riley for the general banter and mickey taking.

Interclub 10 - 20 April 2013

We have been informed by the Icknield RC that the Interclub 10 will now be on SATURDAY 20th April 2013 and not the following Sunday as originally planned.

The first rider will be off at 14:01 on the F15/10 course at Marston Mortaine that was used last year.

Update - 15 April 2013

We have submitted rider names to the Icknield RC (as of 15 April 2013) and we are now waiting for confirmation of start times. This is entirely in the hands of Icknield - as soon as we have the information we will publish it here, on Facebook and also via email.

The event

The HQ is Marston Moretaine Village Hall. At the HQ you will need to "sign on", i.e. sign the start sheet next to your name/ number. You will also pick up your number at this point. The event will be run under CTT Rules and Regulations.

There will be a small cost to ride so as to cover the race levy which is payable to CTT and cover the costs incurred etc. This is likely to be less than £5. Details to follow as soon as we have them.

Give yourself enough time to get signed on, set up and warmed up. The HQ is "a good 10 minutes" - i.e. about 2-3 miles ride from the start. Give yourself longer if you don't want to miss your start time.

Aim to get to the HQ at least one hour before your start.

You will be set off at one minute intervals, as per the startsheet. Check your time and get to the start 5-10 minutes before your allotted time.

Clothing

As this is a CTT event and you are representing the club, please wear club kit. Please refer to the CTT Regulation 16 for more information. Do not wear replicas of pro-team jerseys or kit. If you are not in HNCC colours wear "plain" kit, see below.
Competitors must be clothed from the neck to at least mid-thigh. Sleeves shall be at least mid upper arm length... ...Swimming type suits and running vests are not allowed. To be allowed to start all clothing shall be clean and tidy.

No competitor may carry advertising or the name of a commercial business on his race clothing except:

a) where he is a member of a club or team that has paid the advertising fee, he may carry advertising, but must not compete in clothing of a trade team that is/has been registered with the UCI unless he is a member of that team: or
b) when competing in club events
N.B. The inclusion of a manufacturer's logo shall be permitted.

Competitors on solo machines must prominently display a number on a fluorescent or reflective background of not less than 20x20cm. The number shall be centrally positioned below the waist so as to be clearly visible from the rear when in his normal riding position.

Course

This is a good course and should set you on your way to a season's PB. It is probably the fastest and safest 10 in the district. If you have ridden Southill expect to ride 1.5-2.5 minutes faster. It is your responsibility to know the route. Marshals will be in place but they are not there to guide you necessarily.

Start on old A421 at lay-by, on top of hill, 0.4 miles north of Brogborough at point 15½ flat kerb stones south of the north end of the raised kerb stones (GR 966387).

Proceed north along old A421, straight on at Marston roundabout, taking second exit. The turn is at Fields Road Wootton roundabout (5.44 miles).

Retrace south along old A421, straight on at Marston roundabout to finish 20 yards past start of Armco barrier, 14 yards past a drain and 8 yards before a drain (GR 972398).

The finish is between the entry gate and exit gate of Shanks landfill site, on far side of new A421 dual-carriageway.

Briercliffe 10 - Evening Series Round 2 - Report

The second round of the evening 10 mile time trial series saw another bumper field of riders pit themselves against the technical and sporting Southill course. The wind was blowing strongly from the north-east which meant that the southern sections of the course near Ireland and along the "G&M Growers" road were hard going.

Despite the weather there were several sub-26 minute rides, given that this is still the beginning of the season it bodes well for the months ahead.

Frank Turner kept the time, Geoff Perry, James Spence, Clive Collins and Michael Levitt assisted in getting riders on their way and safely back.

The evening series is proving popular with newcomers to time trialling with Charlie Pugh getting closer to breaking 30 minutes.

Tonight's race saw four new riders take part on a "come and try it" basis - judging by their fledgling times, it looks like there are good time trialling careers in the offing.

Nick Hickman improved on his round one time by nearly a minute. Mike Webb made his debut for the season following a winter training period hampered by back injuries, despite this he posted a "short 27" which augers well for the Interclub event later in April. James Gomm also debuted as did Steve Smith and Jon Traynor.

Simon Doyle was fastest Nomad but was pushed hard by great rides by Jason Lane of CC Ashwell and second-claim Nomad, Ryan Witchell. Witchell was forced to use a spare rear wheel which stubbornly refused to change gear. Former Nomads Captain, Neil JJ Fraser recorded an impressive time in his first appearance of the year.

Briercliffe 10 - Evening Series Round 1 - Report

Fourteen riders from the Nomads and from other local clubs took part in this season's curtain raiser evening 10. Conditions were dry and clear but a fierce easterly wind did it's best to make the evening feel like an Ardennes Classic.

Nigel Wilson set proceedings off wearing #1. An out of sorts Ben Wilson pulled up early in his ride but still managed a sub-30 minute time. Strong performances form CC Ashwell riders, Stuart and Lane and Welwyn Wheelers' Witchell showed who has carried the winter miles in to some early season form. Simon Doyle was first Nomad with a respectable time just over the 26 minute mark.

Time keeping and pushing off duties - Frank Turner, Geoff Perry assisted by Michael Levet.
